Tharun Bhascker Dhassyam who is famous for the short films Anukokunda and Sainma is making his directional debut with the film Pelli Choopulu. The film stars Vijay Devarakonda and Ritu Varma in the lead roles. Very recently the audio of the film scored by Vivek Sagar was launched at Hyderabad which is getting appreciations from music listeners.
The film is releasing on July 29th 2016. The promotions of the film are in full swing right now. The film unit screened the film for some test audiences. On a hectic day, at the end of the final screening on Sunday, Cinebucket caught Tharun Bhascker Dhassyam for a candid interview where he revealed about his journey into films, journey of Pelli Choopulu and many more things.
Why did you choose Pelli Choopulu as your debut film?
I wanted to make my debut with a different subject and worked on some too! But nothing looks like really happening. I wanted to entertain the audiences honestly and took up this subject. Pelli Choopulu is about real life characters. Rom-Com films always get attention and thats how I chose Pelli Choopulu for my debut.
How did Pelli Choopulu start?
Once I have my script ready, I approached many producers but I got confidence only after Raj sir (Raj Kandukuri) came on board. Both Raj Kandukuri sir and Yash sir believed in me and my young team. They gave us the freedom to make the film. Altogether, it’s a team effort and we are confident about the film doing well.
How did you select your actors?
Ritu Varma is the first choice for Chitra role and for Prashanth role, I approached many actors. After Raj sir involved in the project, he along with Yash sir gave us freedom in choosing the actors. The only actor who was in my mind that time was Vijay Devarakonda. That’s how we roped him in. Vijay is a very good actor. Vijay has a potential to become Vijay Sethupathi of Telugu Cinema.
There are always strong characters in your films. Every single character will be registered with the audiences. How do you manage writing such strong characters? Where do you get inspiration from?
I observe people in real life and portray them through my characters. I’m a big fan of Mani Ratnam and while writing one of the college scenes in the film, I accidentally penned something which is similar to a scene from his film Mounaragam. Later, I realized it. I loved watching his films and was impressed with the way he design characters. Mani Ratnam inspires me a lot. Character Prashanth is personification of Heart and Chitra is personification of mind.
Did you expect that the trailer will get a massive response?
From the beginning, I knew that people are going to love our work but this response is amazing and we are happy about it.
The dialogues in the trailer got good response and how do you manage to evoke humour with so simple dialogues?
The conversations and dialogues in our film are very simple. We don’t want to make it dramatic but wanted it to be natural so that people can easily get connected to them. Like how we talk to our father at home or friends outside, the same way the characters in the film also converse. We brought in the real life conversations into the film.
Tell us about the making of the film in Sync Sound.
Sanjay and Varun should be given credit for Sync Sound and they are the actual stars of the film. They took so much risk in completing the film in sync sound. Getting the sound feed from the sets is the major advantage of this technique. I could have easily discarded this and opted for Dubbing but both of them worked hard and made it work well. I must thank both Sanjay and Varun for this.
Any interesting experiences on the sets of Pelli Choopulu?
On one day, while we were travelling in the truck, the brake failed suddenly and it became tough for us to stop the truck. Luckily we escaped from hitting a person and another vehicle and managed to stop it. While everyone of us were so tensed, Vijay was laughing out. That was one incident I remember well. Also, travelling from one place to another place and shifting the equipment was a bit difficult for us. But all of us thoroughly enjoyed the process of film making.
How well did you understand Telugu audiences? Are you sure that they are going to make the film a big hit?
Frankly speaking, I did not let that thought come into my mind. If I start thinking about that I had to make many compromises while writing the script. Already we have a theory that there are A class audiences, B class audiences and C class audiences and people say that a particular film will do well only with particular section of audiences alone. But no one can actually predict the success of the film. All I decided to make a film in honest way. Telling a story honestly is the best way to impress the audiences.
How many days did you take to complete the film?
We wrapped up the entire film in 32 days. The producers have gave us freedom in making which helped us to work happily and the output is satisfactory.
After the release of Pelli Choopulu, I wanted to make a short film. I don’t want a tag like Short film maker or Feature Film maker but wanted to remain as a film maker.
Pelli Choopulu is releasing on this friday. Dont miss it.
We wish the entire team of #PelliChoopulu a grand success. Here is the #CineBucket Logo in #Pellichoopulu style
