The makers of “Pelli Choopulu” are very much happy for the response they are getting for their film. Pelli Choopulu released on 29th July. The film’s cast and crew were busy in interacting with media as part of the post-release promotions of the film. Today, Cinebucket had a conversation with the actor who stood as a major highlight of the film. He is Priyadarshi who played Kaushik character in the film. He spoke about the film, acting, promotions and many more things. Check it out!
Tell us about your background.
From my childhood, films are my passion. There is always something about cinema which moved me. I’ve seen the society first through films. I studied at University of Hyderabad and acted in few films before Pelli Choopulu. I worked at Pixelloid for almost one and half year. I always wanted to assist for films but I decided to learn work before that and started acting in short films. So far, I did 15 short films in the last five years. I am inclined towards literature.
Saagara Sangamam changed my life. The film changed the way I am thinking about films. People like K Balachander and K Viswanath are a huge inspiration to me.
What are the films you acted in before Pelli Choopulu?
My first film was Bypass Road LMD Colony. After that, I acted in films like Bangaaru paadham, Nirvaana, Vircenti Ferrer (Spanish Film), Bommala Ramaram and Terror. I acted in Ghazi which is yet to release.
How did you meet Tharun Bhascker?
I met Tharun Bhascker through common friends. I, Tanvi and Praneeth studied at University of Hyderabad. They knew Tharun Bhascker and introduced me to Tharun Bhascker. I met him for a short film Junun in 2012. Since then, I am travelling with him though we did not work together in the past.
Tell us about your Journey with Pelli Choopulu?
Tharun had the habit of sending his scripts to his close friends and seeks genuine feedback. He asks the detailed review of every single aspect in the script. He sent it to me too. When the auditions started for the film, Praneeth called me and asked me to give it a shot. I went there and auditioned for the role Kaushik. They liked it and that’s how I was roped into the film.
What was running through your mind when you were selected for the Kaushik role ?
Honestly speaking, when I got selected for this hero’s friend role, I took it casually. Before joining the sets, I never imagined that the role would generate such good comedy. Once we started the shoot also, we never thought that people will enjoy it. I was confident that people will laugh for Naa Chavu Nenu Chastha Scene and Cricket Scene. I was clueless in the entire process about how people would react/receive my role.
Tharun said that Kaushik role was inspired from his real life. Tell us about that.
Yes, Kaushik is one of Tharun’s real life friends. He designed this character keeping him in mind. I also knew Kaushik. He is very energetic and brings out comedy in our gang so effortlessly. Usually I observe a lot of people. I study how different people react to different situations. I depend a lot on director. Tharun gave me a lot of suggestions in playing the character. All those helped me to perform well. Tharun chooses his actors very carefully and he is a genius.
Any simlarities between Kaushik and Priyadarshi?
No! Kaushik and Darshi are completely different.
Have you predicted this response while shooting for the film? Reveal us the best compliments you received so far for your role.
Every process after the shoot is a surprise to me. From the Trailer Launch to the Audio launch and then the film release, the response is unbelievable. I knew that our film will receive appreciations but this was completely unexpected.
Ravi Teja garu, Rana garu called me yesterday and appreciated me for the performance. I could not believe all this. Venkatesh garu after watching the performance said “You did a very good performance.” It is all new to me. I am taking time to digest all these but the fact is that I am enjoying it completely.
Moreover, the response on social media is amazing. The troll pages are sharing the dialogues of mine with memes and it is generating a huge buzz too. I am very happy!
What is the response from your parents?
I am very happy with the response from my parents. Usually my father tells me the negative points. But after watching the film, he patted me on my shoulder and I could understand everything. My mother had tears in eyes after watching the film. Both of them are very much happy.
Tell us about the Producers of the film.
Both Raj Kandukuri sir and Yash sir are very co-operative in the entire journey. They gave us a lot of freedom. Both of them are visionary people who are equally passionate about cinema like us. They understood our passion and invested on us. They valued our work and they took the film to the next level. Without both of them, this could not be possible. Even today after the release, they are working hard promoting the film. I’m happy and lucky to be associated with this project and working with them.
Share your experience while working with Abhay and Vijay on sets.
That was absolute fun. We had a great time shooting for the film. On the last day of shoot, on a fun note, I said Tharun that I’ll skip the shoot for the day so that the shoot will get extended and everyone of us could meet again. We all enjoyed the entire process of shoot.
Tell us about the director of the film
Tharun has utmost clarity about what he wants and he was sure about what he was making. This boosted confidence levels of everyone in the team. His confidence levels are amazing and he always welcomed improvisations. It was fun working with him and at the same time, it was a great learning experience for me as an actor.
“Naa Chavu Nenu Chastha..” scene is a major highlight in Pelli Choopulu. Tell us about the on-location experience while you were shooting for the scene.
Tharun just explained me the scene and gave me the dialogue. I wanted to be expressive but Tharun wanted me to perform in a flat manner. Tharun said that my timing was very good and I need to deliver it in a simple way not being very expressive. He also gave me several other suggestions. We had a rehearsal before going for a take. I delivered it in single take but Tharun could not okay it as everyone on the sets were laughing. We had to do it thrice because every time I complete the dialogue, people around me were laughing. But while performing the scene, I was pretty confident that people will surely enjoy the scene in the theatres.
For this particular scene, I must mention about my co-star Anish Kuruvilla. Anish is a great performer. He reacted very naturally through out the scene and because of him creating that atmosphere, I did it perfectly. On a whole, that’s a team effort.
What are the roles you are looking for in the future?
I wanted to play all kinds of roles. I wanted to get recognised as a good character artist.
How was the response for Pelli Choopulu after the release?
The response made me happy and satisfied. All the hard work we did paid off today. From the preview shows, we received a lot of appreciations and today after the release, common audiences also started praising us. People are calling me Kaushik and I feel great about that. I feel that the responsibility on me increased after Pelli Choopulu.
What are your upcoming films?
I am waiting for the release of Bommala Ramaram and Ghazi
